2010 Oscar noms are out

Here is the full list.

I am so so excited for a female to be up there for Best Director (Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker - image above). After reading this over at The Guardian, it made me think about how few women (aside from actresses obviously) have gone home with a golden statue. I know The Academy Awards are not the be all and end of film but for mainstream viewers, they hold a lot of sway.

I am a really disappointed that Samson and Delilah didn’t get the nod for Best Foreign Language film, as a win would go a long way in gaining international exposure for that film, and its brutal yet beautiful storytelling.

And props to District 9 for its best film nom, I re-watched it last week and still thought it was rad. Although the same can be said for it’s fellow nominee, Inglourious Basterds. I am pumped to see Precious, if only to see Mariah without make up. And how awesome that the horrible theme song from Avatar was rejected for Best Original Song (possibly as it was not that original, just a reworking of My Heart Will Go On).

As I am an editor myself, I am going to put money on District 9 for Best Editing - as I think that it really helped the low budget film go to that next level.

Ok, enough nerding out. What do you guys think of the nominations?

Summer: Moonlight Cinema

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Every summer I say I am going to the Moonlight Cinema at Centennial Park. I think I’ve actually been once in the past 5 summers here in Sydney. But this year that is all going to change. Behold my picks from the schedule this year:

Saturday December 19th: Fantastic Mr. Fox.

This is a PREVIEW SCREENING my friends, which means we get to see it before it hits the cinemas. I grew up in one of those families that would sit round as my mum and dad read from this book before bedtime. And now I am all grown up, I also happen to be a big Wes Anderson fan.

Tuesday 29th December: Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

It’s been just long enough since I’ve seen this classic 80’s comedy. Get ready to sit among fellow gen Y’s and nostalgically bellow the opening bars of Yello’s Oh Yeah.

Wednesday 20th January: Where The Wild Things Are.

This is going to be so good, it is probably sold out already. WTWTA - in the wild! What could be better? And Max Records is just the cutest little hipster kid ever - with that name, how could he not be rad.

Thursday 11th February: Zoolander.

Again, I watched the pants off this film, but have not seen it in a while. Will it still be funny? I think so. For old times sake.

Sunday 14th February: New York, I Love You.

I just adored Paris, je t’aime, and this is it’s sister film if you will - all about NYC. This is another preview screening, with a stellar cast across eleven short films. This has been in the works for so long, I was hoping it would hit our shores soon. Natalie Portman even directs one of the films. I hope she does a Rap.

Avatar: Hot or Not?

It’s been ten years since Titanic, and the public want some Jimmy Cameron. But will his much anticipated Avatar be the film that broke the box office’s back?

I saw the trailer on the weekend. My though process went something like this:

HEY! That’s Sam Worthington. He sure looks better on the big screen than last time I saw him in the wee hours at The Judgie. Oh wait, is that the chick from fast and the furious? Wow, that planet looks cool. Pandora huh? I have a friend named Pandora…GIANT BLUE CGI ALIENS.

After that I kinda lost what was going on. I love these futuristic comments on colonialism, the mistakes of our past replayed in parallel contexts for us to ponder upon. It’s nice to think that some military hoon would feel sympathy for the ‘natives’ and rebel, but in real life we know that people don’t really fight wars anymore, just robots.

But srsly, the idea seems rad. The execution and animation? Not so. Even the title seems like one of those ploys to capitalise on cool internet speak - but we all know how that turned out for the i-snack 2.0…

UPDATE:

Turns out Avatar was cool, as was the animation. But I have also found out that an Avatar is actually a Hindu word that means a diety descends from heaven. An incarnation if you will.

Cinema: Dorian Gray

I have just finished reading this book and was wondering who they would cast as Dorian if they made a film. My questions have been answered today as I saw this poster for the new film starring Prince Caspian himself, Ben Barnes.

Comes out in September! I didn’t even know it was being made.
