Filmmakers often take liberty with the story when dealing with book to movie translations, but I can’t help but wonder about David Yates and his motivations behind the 6th Harry Potter film, The Half Blood Prince. To put it bluntly, it’s a teen hormone fest.

Beginning in the opening scene, where Harry flirts with a muggle in a cafe, instead of waiting for Dumbledore at Pivot Drive, to the awkward kiss Ginny and Harry share - not after the Quidditch final as in the book -  but as they hide The Prince’s copy of Advanced Potion Making in the room of requirement. Wasn’t Harry meant to be searching for what Malfoy was plotting in that very room? Or is he too busy pashing his BFF’s sister to worry about Malfoy’s Death Eater status?

Apparently so.

Could the move from action flick to a teen rom-com have anything to do with the great HP/Twilight rivalry? Is there even any comparison? HP6 is killing it at the box office, even with it’s move away from vital plot points and anti-climatic ending. I guess we’ll have to wait for the release of Twilight’s second installment New Moon in November, to see the extent of it’s fan base compared to HP.

Regardless, I’m mostly annoyed because the cutting of the Quidditch matches meant the cutting of Luna Lovegood’s amazing commentary, something I was particularly looking forward to. Her Gryffindor Lion head almost makes up for the loss though.

Possibly Yates was simply making this film lighter to compensate for the darkness of the final two films. It was revealed that he did not want to repeat the battles in Hogwarts so has reserved this for the final film only. But sadly, I don’t think we’ll be seeing any more Quidditch.

This is probably how most normal girls would react to Edward Cullen’s stalking habits.
