These two puppies have been keeping me pretty occupied of late.

Osaka Cafe Lunch is a beautiful little collection of all the cute cafes around my area and beyond. I have been scoping out cafes and finally found a soy latte that didn’t taste like poo, YATTA! (side note: I am lactose intolerant, not just an inner city wanker).  And it also features my favourite haunt Enjoy Cafe, where I had my birthday dinner back in August.

And for animation motivation, I picked up a copy of 100 Japanese Motion Graphic Creators for the year 2008. I have decided that a year in Japan is just not complete until I dust off my After Effects and make a decent animation/film. The book comes with a DVD packed, onedotzero styles, with cool videos to get me inspired.

These little treats are published in both Japanese and English, and you can probably pick them up at Kino Books in Sydney if you were interested. xoxo

Persepolis, not just an historical city of Iran.

For those who don’t know, it is also a graphic novel written by Marjane Satrapi, and I am currently reading it. Calling this book ‘rad’ is an understatement. It is so good that Sony Classics turned it in to a film. And it was screened at Cannes. Nice work if you can get it.

If you are lucky like me, your friend will accidentally leave a copy at your place, and you can read it quickly before you send it back to her. If not, amazon is your new BFF.

The story so far revolves around Marjane’s youth in Iran under the backdrop of the Islamic Revolution and the war with Iraq. We see her studying Marx as a 12 year old, and her parents brave act of smuggling in the young punk Kim Wilde and Iron Maiden posters from Turkey (it may sound trivial, but under the Islamic Regime these things were banned, so her mother sewed the posters in to her jacket, and crossed the border).

I don’t want to give too much more away, but I cannot recommend this read highly enough. And thanks to Holly for leaving it at my place, I will send it with love as soon as I have finished! xxoo

Joe Sacco

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

Much to my friend Eli’s horror, I forgot to pick up my Joe Sacco book, Safe Area Goražde , before I left the country. But I have read the Graphic Novel a few times now, and it is the kind of book that you just need to share (much the same as his later novel, Palestine). So, if anyone needs a good book to read, call Eli! And if you don’t know Eli, head down to your local library or comic shop and have a read, you won’t regret it.
